Bonnie Hunter veranstaltet auf ihrem Blog eine Weihnachts-Quilt-Link-Party, bei der alte wie neue Projekte vorgestellt werden können.

Das ist der allererste "richtige" Quilt, den ich genäht habe (und bisher der einzige). Ich habe ihn vor zwei Jahren zu Weihnachten verschenkt.
Die Blöcke sind 'Utah Star' aus dem Buch '50 Fabulous Paper-Pieced Stars' von Carol Doak, allerdings mit einem zusätzlichen diagonalen Streifen in den Ecken.

This is the very first 'true' quilt I ever finished ( and the only so far). Two years ago it was a christmas present for my nephew.
The blocks are  'Utah Star' from Carol Doak's book '50 fabulous Paper-Pieced Stars' with an additional diagonal strip in the corners.

  
Aus Mangel an Erfahrung und Können habe ich die Decke nur in den Nähten gesteppt, außer am Rand, da war ich mutig und habe ein Freihandmuster ausprobiert. 

Due to the lack of skill and experience I only stitched in the ditch, except for the border where I boldly tried stippling.

 

Grand Illusion Mystery Teil 3/ Part 3

 Teil 3 fand ich doof. Ich bin zwar fähig, Streifen gerade aneinander zu nähen, diese dann aber so zu bügeln, dass die Streifen auch gerade bleiben, übersteigt mein Können.
Von diesen Schwierigkeiten auf dem Weg zum Ziel abgesehen, gefallen mir meine Blöckchen auch nicht.
(Kein Jammern und Gemaule, nur eine Feststellung der Tatsachen.)
 Ich hoffe, dass sie sich einigermaßen harmonisch ins große Ganze einfügen und ich mich dann nur wundern kann, warum ich sie mal nicht mochte.

I didn't like part 3. I can sew together strips with an accurate straight seam, but keeping long strips straight when pressing is beyond me.
Apart from those difficulties of getting there, I don't like my units.(No whining, just stating the facts)
I hope that they will blend harmonically into the big picture and that then I'll wonder why I ever disliked them.

Da mir die 88" auf 88" von Bonnies Maßen für den fertigen Quilt zu breit sind, mache ich erst einmal 3/4 der angegebenen Blöcke. Im Fall der 'Slanted Diamonds' also 75.

Grand Illusion Mystery Quilt Teil 1/ Part 1

 Seit Freitag ist der erste Teil des Gand Illusion Mystery Quilts von Bonnie Hunter online und heute bin ich mit meinen Blöckchen fertig geworden:

Bonnie Hunter Grand Illusion Mystery Quilt - Einführung/ Introduction

Die letzten Jahre habe ich bei den Mystery Quilts nur zugeschaut, diesmal bin ich dabei.
Im Oktober hat Bonnie das Farbschema veröffentlicht. 
Leider funktioniert die Kombination Gelb-Grün-Pink für mich überhaupt nicht. (Wenn ich dann sehe, was andere mit dem Farbschema zaubern, werde ich meinen Alleingang wahrscheinlich bereuen) 

Obwohl ich weder Gelb noch Pink besonders mag, habe ich das mir sympathische Grün rausgeschmissen und durch Mittel- bis Dunkelblau ersetzt. Das war dann wiederum zu nahe an Schwarz, also dafür dann Braun. Derzeit gefallen mir auch helle, weiße und cremige Hintergrundfarben nicht, also ist mein Neutral Grau und zwar durchgängig ein Stoff. Das Grau kann sich nicht so recht entscheiden, ob es warm oder kalt ist und deshalb meines Erachtens wunderbar geeignet, die anderen Farben zusammenzuhalten. Außerdem war es bei dem Stoff Liebe auf den ersten Blick.
Zu guter Letzt fand ich nur Pink auch doof und habe mich daher für einen Mix aus Pink und Orange entschieden. Mit dem grauen Hintergrund aus einem einzigen Stoff und dem eher zahmen Gelb wird der Quilt ein bisschen mehr Pepp an dieser Stelle hoffentlich gut vertragen.
Jetzt passt es für mich - ich kann es kaum erwarten, loszulegen.
Und hier sind meine Stoffe - tataaa:

The past years I only watched others having fun with the mystery quilts, this year I'm going to join in.
Unfortunately the colour combination yellow-green-pink doesn't work for me at all. (Chances are high that I'll regret my solo attempt when I'll see what magic others are performing with those colours).

Although I'm not too fond of yellow and pink I kicked out the green (which is actually a colour I like) and chose medium to dark blue instead. Now that was too close to black so here goes brown. 
Presently I don't like white, cream or other bright backgrounds, too, so it is grey and one constant piece of fabric. It is a grey with a slight brown undertone that can't decide if it's a warm or a cold  hue and therefore imho perfectly convenient to hold all colours together. Besides, it was love at first sight . 
Finally, just pink was ...well, sooo pink and I decided to break it up with orange.
Since I am on the calmer side with the one grey fabric and the rather tame yellow, hopefully a little bit more zing at this point will be ok.
Now it is right for me - can't wait to get started.

Noch drei Blöcke/ Another three blocks

Es wird Zeit, dass dieses Monster fertig wird. Ich werkele schon ewig daran herum. Jetzt habe ich mal alle Blöcke nebeneinander ausgelegt und festgestellt, dass doch noch drei fehlen.

Eigentlich wollte ich sie einzeln quilten und mit blauen Streifen voneinander absetzen, um ein bisschen Ruhe in das Durcheinander zu bringen. Wenn ich mir den Entwurf jetzt so anschaue, gefällt es mir so auch ganz gut. 
Naja, eins nach dem anderen, die Entscheidung hat ja noch ein bisschen Zeit.

Time to get this beast done. I've been pottering around with it for ages. I've laid them out and realized there are still three more to sew.

I want to put them together with a qayg technique and add blue sashing that hopefully will calm down the mixup a little bit.
But when I look at the layout the way it is right now, I like it, too.
Well, first things first, this decision can wait a while longer.

Puppendecke/ DollQuilt

Fertig: Ein Puppenquilt

Finished: A doll quilt.

Es fing damit an, dass ich es nicht übers Herz brachte, diese Minifitzelchen wegzuschmeissen. 
(Eines Tages wird es an meiner Haustür klingeln und zwei gutgebaute, weiß gekleidete Männer werden mich freundlich aber bestimmt und mit festem Griff von dannen führen...)

It all began because I couldn't throw away these tiny crumbs. 
(I know someday the doorbell will ring and two well built guys dressed in white will lead me with a friendly yet firm grip away...)

Also fing ich an, sie mit Zickzackstich auf ein altes Bettlaken zu applizieren, noch völlig planlos, wo das hinführen würde. 

I started to zigzag-applique them on an old, threadbare sheet, having no idea where it would end.

Ich schnitt 2,5" Quadrate und fasste sie mit dem hellgrünen Stoff ein. Den habe ich aus Restbeständen meiner Mutter und der fühlt sich so unangenehm an, dass ich ihn weder in einem "richtigen" Quilt noch für Kleidung nehmen mochte.

Ich blieb dem "Resteverwertungskonzept" treu und nahm auch zum Wattieren kleinste Reststreifen.

I cut 2,5" sqares and sashed them with a light green fabric that came down to me from my mother. It's an odd quality I don't want to use for garment or a 'real' quilt.

Following the meanwhile emerging concept of using up leftovers or wantnots I used really small and scrappy strips of batting.

Zunächst dachte ich, so ein kleiner Quilt wäre eine gute Gelegenheit, freies Maschinenquilten zu üben. Allerdings sind die Blöckchen an sich schon recht unruhig und verrückte Schlaufen oder Kringel wären dann (auch angesichts des beschränkten Raums) zuviel des Guten.

Ich entschied mich für ein diagonales Gitter durch die Mitte der Blöckchen und, weil das noch recht mager aussah, (freihändige) Kreise um die Blöcke rum.

First I thought this little quilt would offer a good opportunity to try some fmq. But the blocks are quite busy and I didn't want to overload it with crazy (and probably not too well done) loops and curls.

I crosshatched through the center of the blocks instead and, because it still needed a bit more, added freehand circles.

Der Puppenquilt wird zusammen mit dem Schaf Teil eines Weihnachtspäckchen für Geschenke mit Herz. Das Schaf zumindest schaut, als ob ihm die Decke gefällt.

The doll quilt along with the sheep will be part of a christmas gift parcel for children in need. To me, the sheep looks like it feels quite comfortable with its new quilt.

Einkaufsbeutel/ Grocery Bags

Der erste Schwung Einkaufsbeutel ist fertig. Von den beiden mittleren in der oberen Reihe werde ich mich wohl nicht trennen können.

Einkaufsbeutel/ Grocery Bags

Ich konnte zwar nichts zur letzten Linkparty bei crazy mom quilts beisteuern, bin aber tüchtig durch die vielen Blogs getourt und natürlich hab ich reichlich Anregungen gefunden. Unter anderem hier superschöne Einkaufstaschen. Hier habe ich ein schönes Tutorial gefunden, die sind zwar ein bisschen anders aber mindestens ebenso schön.

I didn't have anything to share at the last link up party at crazy mom quilts, but that didn't keep me from touring through the many blogs that participated. Of course, as always, I found plenty inspiration and my I wanna do list keeps growing and growing. One idea, gorgeous grocery bags, I picked up here and here I found a great tutorial. These are a bit different but nonetheless lovely.

 
Bei der ersten Tasche habe ich mich am Standardmaß von englischen Superstoretüten orientiert (vom letzten Urlaub im Vereinigten Königreich übrig), manchmal gibt es solche Tüten (mit Zwickel) bei uns beim Metzger. (Wenn nicht, fahrt im nächsten Urlaub nach Großbritannien, es lohnt sich! ;-) oder nehmt ein Schiesser Feinripp als Vorlage)

For the first bag I used the standard size of British superstore bags (leftovers from the last holiday trip to the UK). Here in Germany you can find similar bags (with gusset) sometimes at the butcher's. (If not, spend your next holidays in Britain, it's beautiful! ;-) or you could use a wifebeater as pattern)

Sie sieht zwar auf den ersten Blick ein wenig klein aus, es ist aber erstaunlich, wieviel man darin unterbringt. Der Härtetest waren sechs 1,5l Flaschen. Kein Problem, es war sogar noch Platz für ein paar Kleinigkeiten und die Nähte hielten.

At first sight it seems a bit small but it's surprising how much you can put in. The ultimate test was to put six 1,5l bottles in, no problem and there was still room for some small items and the seams didn't give in.

Die zweite Tasche habe ich an der unteren Kante um 3" und am mittleren Stoffbruch um 2" (also insgesamt plus 4" in der Mitte) vergrößert. 

For the second bag I added 3" at the bottom and 2" at the centre fabric fold ( plus 4" total in the middle)

 
Die nächsten Stoffe liegen schon bereit, denn diese Taschen machen süchtig und ich werde ganz bestimmt etliche Sets davon verschenken.

The fabrics for the next are already chosen, sewing these bags is addictive and I for sure will give away quite a few sets as gifts.

Orphan Blocks

Ein bisschen was habe ich in den letzten Tagen geschafft. Ich habe mich meinem blau-lila-grünem Testblock- Quilt gewidmet. An diesem Quilt nähe ich seit drei Jahren. Jedes Muster und jede Technik die mir über den Weg liefen und nicht auf ein eigenes Projekt warten konnten, fanden ihren Weg in diesen Quilt. Die Anfangsbegeisterung hat nachgelassen aber allmählich ist ein Ende absehbar (wenn auch noch fern am Horizont). Immerhin habe ich viel dabei gelernt. Die hier zusammengesetzten Blöcke (Nearly Insane Blöcke) habe ich ursprünglich als Lückenfüller vorgesehen, das Gesamtkonzept hat sich aber inzwischen geändert :-D

These past days I got a little sewing done. I worked on a blue-purple-green orphan block quilt which I began three years ago. Almost every pattern and technique that caught my interest and couldn't wait for an own project, found their way into this quilt. The enthusiasm has long since passed by but finally, the end is in sight (if only at the far horizon) and I really learned a lot about piecing, colour and mixing up different block sizes. Originally I wanted to use the small 6" blocks (Nearly Insane Quilt blocks) as fill-ins, but the overall design has changed several times in the process  :-D

Ein Geburtstagsgeschenk für eine Freundin. Eigentlich hätten die Socken schon am Dienstag fertig sein sollen, aber so ist das halt. Ich hoffe, sie freut sich trotzdem.
Das Muster ist meine eigene Kreation, ich entwerfe es immer spontan beim Stricken.

A birthday present for a friend. Actually they should have been finished on tuesday, but such is life. I hope she will be pleased nonetheless. The pattern is my own, I usually design it as I go along.

Ich engagiere mich ehrenamtlich in unserer kleinen Gemeindebücherei. Ab und zu bieten wir kleine Aktionen an. Für die Sommerferien sollte ich nun etwas vorbereiten und ich entschied mich für diese tollen Lesezeichen. Damit auch ganz viele gelangweilte Kids den Weg zu uns finden, habe ich schon mal ein paar Lockvögel Lockmonster gebastelt, die auf die Aktion aufmerksam machen sollen:

Optical Illusion Block and Playing with Colours

Willkommen auf meinem Blog! Ich habe es endlich nach Blogland geschafft und ich bin sehr gespannt, wohin die Reise mich führen wird.

Welcome to my blog! I arrived in Blogland at last and I'm curious where this journey will take me.

Ich schuldete einer Nachbarin ein kleines Dankeschön, da kamen die zwei Knäuel Sockenwolle gerade recht. Natürlich konnte ich nicht widerstehen und musste sie auch in meinem Vorrat haben, Kollateralschaden.
 

I owed a neighbour a little thank you and these two balls of sock yarn suited the purpose just right. Of course, as a collateral damage, I had to add them to my stock, too.

Diese Woche fand unser nachbarschaftliches Handarbeits-und-Tratsch-Treffen statt. Von den Neuzugängen inspiriert, wollte ich unbedingt Socken stricken und mit den Weihnachtsgeschenken anfangen. Allerdings kam mir als potentieller Empfänger partout nur mein Schwiegervater in den Sinn und diese Farben sind ganz sicher nicht für ihn. Also habe ich nur ein bisschen mit den verschiedenen Farbkombinationen gespielt. Das hat auch Spaß gemacht, aber ich brenne darauf, mit diesen tollen Farben loslegen.

(Heute morgen war ich dann mit zwei Freundinnen frühstücken und da fiel es mir wie Schuppen von den Augen. Beide Damen werden wohl Opfer der Umstände werden. Ein Finish auf der Entscheidungsebene ;-) )
 
When this week our neighbourly crafts-and-gossip-meeting took place, I decided to bring a selection of my yarn to start with socks for Christmas presents. But the only person I could think of was my father-in-law and these colours are definitely not his. So I enjoyed playing around with various combinations. It was fun, but I really want to work with this strong colours. 

(This morning I had breakfast with two friends and the scales fell from my eyes, so both ladies will be victims of circumstances. Sort of a finish on the decision front ;-) )

Cube Block

Um dann doch noch etwas zustande zu bringen habe ich mit dem ersten Block für einen 3D-Würfel-Quilt angefangen. Nicht, dass ich (neben Socken stricken und Decke häkeln) noch ein Mitnehmprojekt bräuchte...manchmal ist mir halt nach Nähen per Hand und es gibt ja nun wirklich nichts gegen eine breite Auswahl zu sagen, oder was denkt ihr?
 
To get at least something done I started with the first block for an optical illusion quilt. Not that I needed another take along project (besides knitting socks and crocheting a blanket) but at times I feel like handstitching and there is nothing to say against a wide range of projects to choose from, what do you think?
